Software and tool recommendations

This section lists software and services I recommend for privacy and security. These options prioritize open-source code, end-to-end encryption, and zero user tracking.

General guidelines

  • Avoid public social media platforms. When messaging is necessary, use end-to-end encrypted messengers.
  • Do not post personal information online that cannot be permanently deleted later.
  • Use a password manager to generate unique, strong passwords for every account.
  • Turn on device encryption and keep lock screens enabled.
  • Avoid plugging unfamiliar USB drives or peripherals into your computer.
  • Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use, or use Airplane mode when offline.
  • Grant minimal app permissions on your mobile devices and network.

Desktop vs. mobile security

Desktop operating systems were historically not designed with strict app sandboxing. For sensitive activities, stick to updated mobile operating systems with modern application sandboxing.

Avoid installing unofficial custom ROMs solely to remove pre-installed software, as unlocking the bootloader compromises Android’s verified boot security model. Use hardened operating systems like GrapheneOS or stick to stock firmware receiving regular vendor updates.

Core security rule

DO NOT USE A DEVICE THAT IS NO LONGER RECEIVING REGULAR SECURITY UPDATES.
